Nici and negative coordination

Romanian uses nici to add a negative item and nici...nici to coordinate two or more excluded items. In both patterns, the negative verb normally keeps nu: Nu vreau nici cafea, nici ceai. (I want neither coffee nor tea.)

What does a single nici add?

A single nici adds another person, thing, time, or action to an already negative meaning. Depending on the context, English translates it as either, also not, or not even; it does not itself replace the negative particle nu in an ordinary finite clause.

The placement of nici tracks the item it adds: put it directly before that item, as in nici Ana or nici cafea. When the added meaning is the whole verb phrase, use nici nu before the finite verb: Nici nu m-a sunat. For the basic position of nu, see Romanian negation with nu.

How is nici different from nici...nici?

Use one nici when you add one more negative element to an existing clause. Use the paired pattern nici X, nici Y when both coordinated elements are excluded: Romanian nici...nici corresponds to neither...nor or not...either.

The two coordinated parts should have the same grammatical role: two subjects, two objects, two place phrases, or two clauses. The commas make the two members visible in writing; the second nici is not optional in the paired pattern when you mean that both alternatives are excluded.

Where does nu go in nici...nici clauses?

In a complete coordinated-clause pattern, place nici before each clause's negative marker and place nu directly before that clause's finite verb: Nici Ana nu citește, nici Vlad nu scrie. (Ana does not read, and Vlad does not write either.)

• For two words or phrases, one negative verb can govern the pair: Nu beau nici apă, nici suc. (I drink neither water nor juice.)
• For two full clauses, repeat the negative pattern: Nici nu sun, nici nu trimit mesaj. (I neither call nor send a message.)
• In a compound tense, nu comes before the finite auxiliary: Nici nu am sunat, nici nu am scris. (I neither called nor wrote.)
• Do not remove nu merely because nici already contributes negative meaning. Romanian uses negative concord; Romanian negative concord explains the wider system.

The repeated nu does not create two separate English-style negatives. The clause has one negative interpretation, while nici marks the excluded member or members. Compare Nici nu citesc, nici nu scriu (I neither read nor write) with the single-addition pattern Nu citesc nici romane (I do not read novels either).

Can nici coordinate words and clauses?

Yes. Coordination can join individual words, larger phrases, or finite clauses, but the two parts should match in function and meaning. Do not mix a bare noun with an unrelated full clause just because both can be translated with nor.

When the predicate is shared, a single nu can follow the coordinated subjects: Nici Maria, nici Elena nu răspund. When each member is a clause, give each finite verb its own nu: Nici Maria nu răspunde, nici Elena nu scrie. This difference is about the unit being coordinated, not about a change in the meaning of nici.

What are the useful boundaries and variants?

• Neutral contemporary Standard Romanian uses both single nici and paired nici...nici in speech and writing. The choice is grammatical and semantic, not a formal-versus-informal replacement.
• A short reply may omit the verb: Nici cafea, nici ceai! (Neither coffee nor tea!) This is an elliptical answer. For a complete sentence, keep the negative verb: Nu beau nici cafea, nici ceai.
• The intensifier nici măcar means not even and can strengthen one negative item: Nu am nici măcar un minut. (I do not even have a minute.) It is related to single additive nici, but it is not the paired coordination pattern.
• Do not confuse coordinated nici with the one-word determiner niciun/nicio: Nu am niciun bilet. (I have no ticket.) The separate sequence nici un/nici o is used when un/o keeps an independent numeral or article meaning, as in N-am nici un bilet, nici două. (I have neither one ticket nor two.) Current DOOM3 supports this distinction.

Mistakes to avoid

• Do not use nici alone as a substitute for nu: for I do not want coffee either, say Nu vreau nici cafea, not Nici vreau cafea.
• Do not use only the first nici when two alternatives are excluded: say Nu aleg nici ceai, nici cafea, not Nu aleg nici ceai, cafea.
• Do not omit the second nu when you coordinate two full clauses: say Nici nu plec, nici nu rămân, not Nici nu plec, nici rămân for the target neither...nor meaning.
• Do not treat niciun mesaj as two coordinated words. It is the one-word negative determiner before a singular noun.
• Keep the two members parallel: Nici în tren, nici în autobuz coordinates two place phrases, while a clause-level alternative needs a full pattern such as Nici nu merg cu trenul, nici nu merg cu autobuzul.
