Romanian noun gender: masculine, feminine, and neuter

Learn how Romanian’s three noun genders work and use the singular and plural together to recognize them.

Romanian nouns belong to one of three grammatical genders: masculine, feminine, or neuter. Gender affects the forms that accompany a noun: un băiat bun (a good boy), o fată bună (a good girl), and un scaun nou, două scaune noi (a new chair, two new chairs).

How can you identify a noun’s gender?

For a count noun, learn its singular and plural together, then use the one-two test: un or o with the singular and doi or două with the plural; the pattern un / două identifies a neuter noun.

GenderOne nounTwo nounsExample
Masculineundoiun băiat, doi băieți (one boy, two boys)
Feminineodouăo carte, două cărți (one book, two books)
Neuterundouăun caiet, două caiete (one notebook, two notebooks)

How does the one-two test work?

  1. Find or learn the noun’s plural. Do not try to predict it only from the last letter of the singular.
  2. Use un or o with the singular noun: un caiet or o carte.
  3. Use doi or două with the plural noun: doi băieți or două cărți.
  4. Read the pair together: un / doi is masculine, o / două is feminine, and un / două is neuter.

The forms un and o also work as the indefinite articles a/an, so a phrase such as un caiet can mean either one notebook or a notebook. The gender test is about the agreement pattern, not about forcing a numerical meaning.

What clues help before you know the plural?

  • Meaning is a useful clue for people and animals: a male person is normally masculine, and a female person is normally feminine. For example, un student is masculine, while o studentă is feminine.
  • Some endings are common clues. Many feminine nouns end in , such as o casă, and many masculine nouns end in a consonant, such as un băiat.
  • These clues are not a complete rule. The masculine noun un tată ends in , and both masculine and neuter nouns can end in a consonant: un băiat, doi băieți versus un scaun, două scaune.
  • The plural ending is not enough either: feminine o carte, două cărți and neuter un exercițiu, două exerciții both end in -i, while feminine o marfă, două mărfuri and neuter un hotel, două hoteluri both end in -uri.

Why does gender matter?

Gender controls the singular indefinite article and helps determine agreement. Compare un caiet nou, două caiete noi (a new notebook, two new notebooks) with o carte nouă, două cărți noi (a new book, two new books). For more practice with articles, see the Romanian indefinite articles and Romanian adjective agreement articles.

Gender also appears in definite forms: băiatul (the boy), casa (the house), and caietul (the notebook). See the Romanian definite article for those endings.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not treat every noun with un as masculine. Neuter nouns also use un in the singular; their două plural reveals the difference.
  • Do not treat every ending as a gender label. Check the noun’s plural and, when needed, its dictionary entry.
  • Do not assume that două means feminine only. It is used with feminine and neuter plural nouns; doi is the masculine plural form.
  • If a noun is not normally counted with doi or două, use its recorded gender and the agreement of surrounding words instead of inventing a one-two test.
  1. Which pair shows a neuter noun?

    • o carte, două cărți
    • un caiet, două caiete
    • un băiat, doi băieți
    • o studentă, două studente

Caiet takes un in the singular and două in the plural. That un / două pattern is the one-two test for neuter nouns.

  2. Complete the plural phrase: ___ băieți

    • două
    • o
    • doi
    • un

Băiat is masculine, so its plural uses doi: doi băieți. The form două belongs with feminine and neuter plural nouns.

  3. Which sentence is correct?

    • Doi caiete sunt noi.
    • Un caiete este nou.
    • Două caiete sunt noi.
    • O caiet este nou.

Caiet is neuter: it takes un in the singular and două in the plural. In the plural sentence, caiete and noi agree with două.

  4. Which pair correctly identifies a feminine noun?

    • o carte, două cărți
    • un carte, doi cărți
    • o carte, două carte
    • un carte, două cărți

Carte is feminine, so it takes o in the singular and două in the plural. Its plural is cărți, not the unchanged singular.

  5. What is the safest way to learn the gender of hotel?

    • Assume every noun ending in a consonant is masculine.
    • Memorize un hotel, două hoteluri and use the pair.
    • Assume every plural ending in -uri is feminine.
    • Choose the gender from the last letter without learning the plural.

Endings are only clues. The pair un hotel, două hoteluri shows that hotel is neuter, and learning the plural prevents a guess based on its final consonant.
