Relative and absolute superlatives

Learn how Romanian ranks one noun as the most or least, and how it intensifies an adjective without making a ranking.

Romanian has two useful kinds of superlative. A relative superlative ranks one person or thing inside a group: Acesta este cel mai bun restaurant din oraș. (This is the best restaurant in the city.) An absolute superlative only gives a very high degree: Restaurantul este foarte bun. (The restaurant is very good.)

How do you form a Romanian relative superlative?

Put the agreeing form of cel before the invariable mai and the adjective; for the least degree, use mai puțin instead of mai alone.

MeaningStructureExample
the most / relative superioritycel / cea / cei / cele mai + adjectiveCea mai frumoasă clădire din centru. (The most beautiful building in the centre.)
the least / relative inferioritycel / cea / cei / cele mai puțin + adjectiveEste cel mai puțin aglomerat drum. (It is the least busy road.)

The words cel, cea, cei, and cele agree with the noun being ranked. The degree word mai is invariable, and puțin stays in the same form in this structure. The adjective still agrees with the noun: cel mai bun student, but cea mai bună studentă.

How do you show the group?

Add a group expression when the comparison set matters. A common pattern uses din with a singular place or collective expression and dintre with a plural set or pronoun.

Group expressionExampleMeaning
singular place or group with dincel mai interesant film din festivalthe most interesting film in the festival
plural set with dintrecea mai bună dintre colegethe best among the female colleagues
plural set introduced by toatecele mai bune dintre toate variantelethe best of all the options

These prepositions help make the comparison set explicit, but the superlative can also stand without them when the group is already understood: El este cel mai rapid. (He is the fastest.)

How does the relative superlative agree?

Match both the first element and the adjective to the noun's gender and number. This is the same agreement system used by ordinary adjectives; review adjective form patterns when the adjective has an unexpected plural or feminine form.

NounRelative superlativeExample
masculine singularcel mai buncel mai bun student (the best student)
feminine singularcea mai bunăcea mai bună studentă (the best female student)
masculine pluralcei mai bunicei mai buni studenți (the best students, masculine or mixed group)
feminine or neuter pluralcele mai bunecele mai bune cărți (the best books)

Where does the definite article go?

When the noun comes first, it normally carries the definite article: romanul cel mai interesant (the most interesting novel), colegele cele mai bune (the best female colleagues). When the superlative comes before the noun, the noun normally has no separate definite article: cel mai interesant roman, cele mai bune colege. Both orders are standard; the second puts more focus on the adjective. See definite adjective constructions for the wider pattern with cel and its forms.

How do you form the absolute superlative?

Put an intensifying adverb before the adjective, without naming a group or ranking one item against others. The neutral contemporary Standard Romanian choice is foarte: Am citit un articol foarte interesant. (I read a very interesting article.)

IntensifierUseExample
foarteneutral standard choiceEste foarte important. (It is very important.)
extrem destrong, emotionally markedEste extrem de important. (It is extremely important.)
cât se poate deemphaticEste cât se poate de clar. (It is as clear as possible.)
tareconversationalEste tare frumos. (It is really beautiful.)

Unlike a relative superlative, foarte bun does not say that something is better than every other member of a group. It says only that the degree of goodness is high. Do not add cel to an absolute superlative unless you are changing it into a relative construction.

What should you remember about special adjectives?

The pattern works with adjectives that normally allow comparison, but some adjectives already express a limit or a unique status. Words such as unic (unique), optim (optimal), and suprem (supreme) are not good candidates for automatic forms such as cel mai unic. The separate irregular comparison article covers lexical and restricted comparison in more detail.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not confuse ranking with intensity: cel mai interesant film din festival means the most interesting film in the festival, while un film foarte interesant means a very interesting film.
  • Do not leave cel unchanged. Use cea mai bună carte, cei mai buni studenți, and cele mai bune cărți according to the noun.
  • Do not forget adjective agreement: cea mai frumoasă clădire, not cea mai frumos clădire.
  • Do not put a definite article on the noun after a preposed superlative: cel mai bun student, not cel mai bun studentul.
  • Use foarte as the neutral standard intensifier. Tare is a common conversational choice, not the default for formal or neutral written prose.
  1. Which phrase expresses a relative superlative of superiority?

    • un student foarte bun
    • cel mai bun student din grupă
    • un student bun
    • studentul bun

Cel mai bun student din grupă ranks one student above the others in a stated group. Foarte bun only expresses a high degree.

  2. Complete the sentence: Mara este ___ din echipă. (Mara is the least tired in the team.)

    • cel mai puțin obosită
    • cea mai puțin obosită
    • cea mai puțină obosită
    • cea puțin mai obosită

Mara is feminine singular, so cea and obosită agree with it. The least construction is cel / cea / cei / cele mai puțin + adjective.

  3. Which sentence means (the most interesting book in the library)?

    • Cartea cea mai interesantă din bibliotecă.
    • Cartea cel mai interesant din bibliotecă.
    • Cartea cele mai interesante din bibliotecă.
    • Cartea cea mai interesant din bibliotecă.

Cartea is feminine singular, so the agreeing pair is cea ... interesantă. With the noun first, its definite article is already present in cartea.

  4. Which sentence uses the preposed relative superlative correctly?

    • Cea mai frumoasă fotografie este pe perete.
    • Cea mai frumoasă fotografia este pe perete.
    • Ce mai frumoasă fotografie este pe perete.
    • Cea mai frumos fotografie este pe perete.

Before the noun, the phrase is cea mai frumoasă fotografie: cea and frumoasă agree with feminine singular fotografie, and the noun has no extra definite article.

  5. Which sentence gives an absolute superlative without ranking the subject inside a group?

    • Este foarte dificil.
    • Este cel mai dificil din test.
    • Este mai dificil decât primul exercițiu.
    • Este dificil din test.

Foarte dificil intensifies the adjective without comparing the subject with a group. Cel mai dificil is relative, mai dificil decât is comparative, and the last sentence is missing the intended ranking structure.
